Online Security & Spam
Spam and Junk mail is an every increasing problem for both individuals and companies alike. It is not just the sheer nuisance of having to wade through all that junk to get to the stuff you really want, it is also the danger of email borne viruses, phishing scams, and spyware embedded in images.
There are a number of ways that your email address may be harvested by spammers. Whilst precautions may be taken to avoid this, they are likely to limit rather than eradicate the nuisance. However, there are a number of steps you can take to limit their opportunities.
- Ensure all your internet security, including virus protection, firewall, and ad blocking software are kept up to date. If automatic updates are available, subscribe to them
- If you receive spam, under no circumstances respond to it. Do not unsubscribe as this is merely confirming to the spammer that it is an active email address
- Ensure you keep the preview pane of your email programme closed at all times to limit the risk of exposing your computer to malicious code
- Do not add confusion to the issue by forwarding virus warnings en masse. The majority of these forwarded by email have been proved to be hoaxes.
In addition to the above standard measures, if you are an existing client, upgrading your standard POP mailbox to an Advanced one, automatically adds an additional layer of protection with controllable spam and virus filters. A Very Strong Recommendation
In addition to the above precautions, I also use, and strongly recommend the use of Mailwasher Pro. This enables you to eradicate anything you do not wish to download before it even gets near your system.
It is easy to install and configure, has learning filters, saves awful lot of time, and is quite honestly the best $37 (one off payment) I have spent. If you would like to know more about this, just click on the ad below.
